Just curious, what was Vang Pao's real rank in the military, which level of the General ranking? I had always thought that his last rank was a Major General (2 stars), but then just for curiosity sake, look him up in Wikipedia and it has him bumped up to Lieutenant General (3 stars). Much appreciate for anyone with the clarification.

i'm not too sure about us naming but those old military system go by four level in each of the rank. typically they went by:
-- 4th rank the lowest the in that rank was called:cavtabvas
-- 3rd the second step in a rank was called: three
-- 2nd the third step in a rank was called: tow
-- 1st the highest in the rank was called: ej

i do not have a hard evidence to backup but i think GVP was on the 2nd step in his rank which was a phounthree. i was once thought GVP was on 3rd step which was tow, but later on i came to know better that not 3rd step but on 2nd step call phounthree. if anyone count by rank it was not that high up there but please remember a small country like that no one else in the country get to the 1st rank except the king himself. i have heard of someone got to the 2nd rank once but could not recall his name at the moment.

unlike a bigger country as Thailand where there are usually a few 1st rank general going around, in former LAOS not to mention the 1st rank general, the 2nd rank only heard there was one once only. there were so many general in thailand that several years back one was shot dead the police, the shooter just claim drug related because at the time Thailand got a rule to kill before report for drug related traders. it was a hot topic at the time because the law make it easy to kill any high level officials by just kill 1st then claim drug trader later no punishment for the killer.

again do not count on my word too much just ask around for people who knows and have the hard evidence to backup.

While in Laos, at the FAR 2nd Military Region, GVP was a three-star
General - Phoun three - as the Commander.
Chao Manivong was a 2-star general- Phoun Catasvas as VP deputy.

At Fresno, Chao Ae was saying that GVP was due for a promotion to a 4-
star General but due to the change of Government that he did not get
his promotion... until the time at his funeral at Fresno in Feb 2011
when a Royal Decree was presented for VP to be officially pinned
another star to make GVP as a 4-star General - Phoun Thow (with two
white stars across at the inner edge and two stars along the shoulder
rank - I have a picture somewhere in my hard drive) - that makes VP a
member of the highest elite Lao Generals of the former Royal Kingdom
of Laos.

As I heard, there is no Hmong Military General yet since the Lao
Revolutionary Party came to power in 1975. But there is at least one
Hmong General, as I know, in the Lao Police Force (Ko Po So)... And
One Minister of Justice... one Ambassador (Ya Xeng - in Cambodia)...
in addition to Pany as Politburo & President of Lao Parliament.

Phoun three is a three stars general? I can't find the military ranks for
Laotian army, but I would think that Thai and Laos would use the same name.
Again, my understanding is that a phoun three is a major general, two stars.
I could be totally wrong on the Thai and Laotian using the same names for
the officer ranks.

I was not too sure about the Laotian rank for the Thai do not have the
catavas rank as Dr. Pao and others have mentioned. If one is to use the
logic of the mai ek mai tho as the level of the rank, then one would
conclude that the phon catavas is a brigadier general, one star, therefore
phon three is a major general, two stars. If as you've said, phon three is
a three stars general, then how many stars does the chom phon, the rank
that's higher than the phon ek, have? Wouldn't that be a six stars? Is
such rank, a six stars general, even exist?

Laos was a small country and have never had 4 Star Generals. The late
Ouane Rathikoune and Bounpone Maktheparath (Supreme Commander of the
Royal Lao Army) were 3 Star Generals.

Both men you mentioned are dead longtime ago. They used to be
Commander of Defeated and run-away Royal army and now non existing.

The two Generals (four stars) of the victorious army are:

1. General Khamtay Siphandone former Commander-in-Chief of the Lao
People's Army and former President of Lao PDR now retired in South of
Laos.

2. General Sisavath Keobounphan, former Chief-of-Staff of the Lao
People's Army and former Prime Minister of Lao PDR.

Both men are still respected, healthy and strong.

On a side note, not to lessen anything GVP has achieved, but just for
clarification, shouldn't somebody make that distinction in Wikipedia
(English language section anyway) between the British and French ranking so
whoever do a search could understand that even though he has three stars,
his rank was Major General and not Lieutenant General? Now a day not just
anyone can make changes to Wikipedia anymore, so for those that have the
ability to, wouldn't it be wise to make that clarification so others
wouldn't think that we are so crave for glory that we even have misleading
information? Just a thought.

From my understanding, any one can edit the Wilipedia...
It is simply register and get a password... then you can edit any
section.

I did that for the Topic on Shaman... just adding the Hmong Shaman
onto that topic.

This is the reason that I posted earlier that one of the TASK for 2011
is for every one (Hmong) to get into Wikipedia and start making our
mark in that online Encyclopedia.

Apparently I guess someone must have done just that, made a change to the entry, erased the three stars general and changed it to Lieutenant General, without any background information of how he came to get the bumped level. The thing about Wikipedia is that you never know what to believe because information there could be change so randomly. With this randomness, the credibility suffered. With the credibility issue I thought I heard news about Wikipedia made changes to restricted who can made changes, but I guess I was wrong.

Just curious, what was Vang Pao's real rank in the military, which level of the General ranking? I had always thought that his last rank was a Major General (2 stars), but then just for curiosity sake, look him up in Wikipedia and it has him bumped up to Lieutenant General (3 stars). Much appreciate for anyone with the clarification.
